PlayStation Plus Issue 0 PlayStation Steve Merrett 83% The one-player mode is a little too easy, and die-hard combatants will probably opt to stick with the game's hard mode, but this is easily one of the most impressive beat 'em ups you're likely to see for a fair while. Unfortunately, looks aren't everything. Still, this is an excellent game, and certainly an attractive offering.
PlayStation Plus Issue 0 PlayStation Matt Broughton 83% Toshinden doesn't have such a 'solid' feel to it, with gravity and weight seeming somehow less realistic in comparison to the aforementioned game. Of course, this is a much more fantasy-based game, but I can't help feeling that I'm not totally in control throughout. This isn't to say that Toshinden isn't fantastic, it just isn't the best.
Play Issue 1 PlayStation Uncredited 76% The UK version has been improved in the sense that the special moves are no longer accessed via the top buttons, making it slightly more challenging. Only slightly though. The lack of combos is a real problem, making it tough to string together decent attack patterns and this is a real boo-boo for a beat 'em-up. Shame really, because if more effort had gone into polishing up the gameplay by simply making sure there was more to it, Battle Arena Toshinden would have been a blinding piece of software. As it stands though, it will always go down as being the best looking beat 'em-up ever... shame about the gameplay!

Now, nearly two years later, Toshinden is still a pretty good fighting game and can almost hold its weight in a genre crowded with heavy hitters. Toshinden still plays decently, even by today's standards, and the 3D character movements have yet to be surpassed. Both new and long-time PlayStation owners should definately check it out.
